Stephen has been working with Troutreach since April 2019 as a technician, supporting numerous research projects from the field, lab, and office. He possesses an array of skills, developed from a fervent and seemingly erratic pursuit of numerous environmental research interests. Stephen is driven by a deep love of the outdoors and a limitless curiosity for how the natural world functions.

Stephen grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba and completed a BSc in Biology at the University of Winnipeg. During his undergraduate degree he became enthralled with SCUBA diving as a means to access the underwater world. After working in the Canadian arctic as a scientific diver and tolerating the frustration of living in a land-locked city, Stephen moved to Australia in pursuit of warm, colourful, tropical SCUBA diving opportunities. He completed a Masters degree in Environmental Management at the University of Queensland while assisting with research on coral physiology on the Great Barrier Reef.

Upon the completion of his degree, Stephen moved back to Canada and was employed at the IISD – Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) where he supported research on freshwater ecosystems. After three years at the IISD-ELA, he was compelled to find work in Saskatchewan in order to live with his life-partner, Stephanie.

Troutreach was a perfect fit for Stephen. He is now involved with multiple Troutreach projects that allow him to pursue his interests in ecology and environmental management. He is also commencing a new research project investigating the impacts of invasive earthworms in boreal forests and urban environments.
